Building 85 Air Conditioning Project – Airbus UK, Broughton

The Project

TDC provides full air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation maintenance services at Airbus UK Broughton on behalf of CBRE. Our Projects Team was commissioned to survey a large open-plan office and adjoining meeting rooms in Building 85, the Design Office at Airbus Broughton, after CBRE and Airbus raised two issues: office areas becoming uncomfortably warm in summer, and high CO₂ levels caused by insufficient fresh air circulation. The client also wanted to move away from natural gas entirely in favour of a fully electric HVAC system.

Our Delivery

TDC designed a new air conditioning and ventilation system built around Mitsubishi Electric VRF technology with heat recovery ventilation and CO₂ monitoring and control, then produced the full scope of work and cost plan. The installation was extensive and intrusive — ceiling sections throughout the office had to come down and the existing HVAC systems decommissioned — all without disrupting a 24-hour workspace. Working closely with the CBRE and Airbus project teams, TDC phased the programme around night shifts and the Christmas shutdown, and assigned a dedicated 14-strong team covering a Project Manager, Working Supervisors, Engineers and Apprentices.

The Result

The project passed several on-site HSE audits with no corrective actions and was delivered ahead of schedule. It achieved a significant reduction in CO₂ levels through the new fresh air and heat recovery system, enhanced temperature control across all office areas year-round, and the complete removal of natural gas dependency, with the existing boilers successfully decommissioned.
